What Is a Full Mouth Restoration?

Full mouth restoration, also called full mouth rehabilitation, is the systematic rebuilding of all or most of the teeth in both jaws, restoring correct function, correct bite height and correct appearance at the same time.

It is treatment for damage rather than decoration, though the improvement in appearance is usually dramatic, because worn teeth make people look considerably older than they are.

The technical difference from a cosmetic smile makeover is that a restoration changes your vertical dimension, meaning the height of your bite when your teeth are together. That is a functional decision affecting your jaw joints and your muscles, and it requires proper planning and testing. A makeover works within the bite you already have.

Who Needs Full Mouth Rehabilitation?

• Severe tooth wear. From grinding, acid erosion, or decades of ordinary use. Teeth look short, flat and yellow because worn enamel exposes the darker dentine underneath.
• Bite collapse. When back teeth are lost, the front teeth take loads they were never designed for. They may splay outwards, gaps open, edges chip and the lower face can appear shorter.
• Multiple failing restorations. A mouth full of crowns and large fillings placed over many years, all reaching the end of their lives at roughly the same time.
• Widespread decay. Often following dry mouth from medication, illness or years without dental access.
• Jaw pain, clicking or recurring headaches linked to an unstable or collapsed bite.
• Extensive tooth loss where a removable denture is no longer acceptable to live with.

Full Mouth Restoration Options: From Least to Most Involved

Most real cases combine several of these. Nobody should be pushed into the largest option because it is simplest to plan.

Option 1: Crowns and Onlays on Your Own Teeth

Option 2: Crowns Plus Bridges

Where some teeth are missing but the gaps are short and the neighbouring teeth are strong enough to carry a bridge. Our dental bridges page explains when a bridge is the right answer and when it is not.

Option 3: Selective Implants Plus Crowns

Implants replace the missing back teeth to restore support and stop the front teeth being overloaded, then the remaining teeth are crowned to the new bite height.

Option 4: Full Arch Implant Bridge

Where the remaining teeth in an arch are not worth saving, All-on-4 or All-on-6 replaces the entire arch with a fixed bridge carried on four or six implants. Fixed, cleanable, and not removed at night.

Option 5: Implant-Supported Overdenture

A removable prosthesis that clips onto two or more implants. Considerably less expensive than a fixed bridge and vastly more stable than a conventional denture, which for many patients is the change that matters most. Our dental prosthetics page covers the options.

How the Bite Is Planned

This is the stage that separates a genuine restoration from a large pile of crowns, and it is the stage worth asking any clinic about in detail.

Before anything is prepared, we record how your jaw closes and where it wants to sit when the muscles are relaxed, take 3D scans, and photograph the face at rest and smiling. From that we work out how much bite height has actually been lost, which is often more than the patient assumes.

The new height is then built into temporary restorations that you wear and eat with for a period before anything permanent is made. Your muscles and joints get to vote. If something is uncomfortable, we adjust the temporaries, not the finished ceramic.

What Does a Full Mouth Restoration Cost in Albania?

There is no single number, because no two cases have the same mix. Build your estimate from the components:

For scale: a full upper and lower rehabilitation using twenty four crowns commonly reaches £25,000 to £45,000 in UK private practice. This is the treatment category where the difference between Albania and Western Europe stops being a saving and becomes the difference between having the treatment and living without it. How Long Does a Full Mouth Restoration Take?

Crowns and bridges only: one trip of seven to ten days, occasionally split into two shorter visits.

Anything involving implants: two trips roughly four months apart, because bone healing sets the pace and nothing shortens it.

Anything involving bone grafting: longer, because grafted bone needs four to nine months to mature before implants go into it.

Protecting the Result

Most full mouth restorations are treating damage caused by grinding. If the grinding is not addressed, the new work wears down the same way the old teeth did, just more slowly and more expensively.

A night guard is part of the plan rather than an upsell. Wear it.

Beyond that, the gums holding everything up need professional cleaning every three to six months, as our gum health guide explains, and the areas under bridges need cleaning daily with interdental brushes and a water flosser. Ceramic does not decay, but the tooth margins and the gums around them absolutely do.

Do these things and a well planned restoration serves you for fifteen years and more. Skip them and it does not.
