Whitening is the cheapest cosmetic dental treatment there is, and it is the one most often done badly. It is also the one surrounded by the most nonsense, from charcoal pastes to shop bought gels to claims about lasers that the evidence does not support.

Here is what actually works, what it does to sensitivity, what it costs in Tirana, and when you should not bother.

How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

Professional whitening uses a peroxide gel, either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which penetrates the enamel and breaks down the stain molecules trapped inside the tooth. It does not strip, sand or bleach away tooth structure. The colour change happens chemically, inside the tooth, not on its surface.

The concentration a dentist uses is far higher than anything sold over a counter, which is why one supervised clinic session outperforms weeks of shop bought strips.

How well it works depends entirely on what caused the discolouration in the first place.

• Responds well: coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco staining, and the general yellowing that comes with age as enamel thins.
• Responds poorly: grey discolouration from an old root canal, tetracycline banding from childhood antibiotics, and white or brown fluorosis spots. These usually need other cosmetic treatment such as veneers or crowns instead.

Professional Teeth Whitening Options

In-Office Whitening

High concentration gel is applied by the dentist with the gums fully isolated and protected, in a single appointment of around an hour. It gives the fastest result, it is the most controlled, and because a professional is watching your gums the whole time, it is the safest.

Laser or Light-Activated Whitening

Exactly the same gel is used, with a light or laser used to accelerate the chemical reaction. It shortens the time in the chair.

Here is the honest part: the published evidence on whether the light meaningfully improves the final shade, as opposed to simply reaching it faster, is genuinely mixed. Several controlled studies have found no significant difference at the two week mark between gel with light and the same gel without it. Any clinic telling you laser whitening is dramatically superior is overselling it.

Take-Home Whitening Trays

Custom trays made from a scan of your teeth, with a lower concentration gel worn for a set number of hours or nights. It is slower, and the results often last longer, because the gel spends far more total time in contact with the enamel than a single clinic session can deliver.

For many patients this is the best value of the three, and the trays are reusable for years afterwards.

The Combination

The strongest approach is both. One in-office session to do the heavy lifting, then trays to extend and maintain the result at home. This is what we recommend to most patients who are travelling anyway.

What About Whitening Toothpaste and Shop-Bought Strips?

Whitening toothpaste removes surface stain using mild abrasives and sometimes a very low level of peroxide. It does not change the underlying colour of the tooth. It is useful for maintenance after real whitening and useless as a substitute for it.

There is a second issue worth knowing. Highly abrasive whitening pastes used aggressively over years wear enamel down, and thinner enamel lets more of the darker dentine underneath show through. Some people end up with yellower teeth than they started with.

Shop bought strips do contain a genuine bleaching agent, at a low concentration, with no protection for your gums and no custom fit. They work slowly, they work unevenly on anything other than perfectly aligned teeth, and gum irritation is common.

Professional Cleaning First, Always

Whitening gel works on the tooth, not on the film sitting over it. If there is plaque and tartar in the way, the gel cannot reach the enamel evenly and the result comes out patchy.

Teeth Whitening Sensitivity: What to Expect

Some sensitivity to cold for 24 to 48 hours after whitening is normal, common, and temporary. It happens because peroxide passes through the enamel into the dentine tubules, and it settles on its own.

We reduce it by applying a desensitising agent containing fluoride or potassium nitrate before and after treatment, keeping session length sensible rather than pushing for a dramatic single visit result, and spacing sessions where more than one is needed.

If you already have sensitive teeth, say so at the consultation. We will use a lower concentration over a longer period instead, which reaches the same place more comfortably.

One thing to know before you start: existing fillings, crowns, veneers and bridges do not whiten. Ceramic and composite are inert to peroxide. If you have a white filling on a front tooth, it will stay its current shade while the tooth around it lightens, and it will then need replacing to match. We check for this and tell you in advance, because discovering it afterwards is an unpleasant surprise and an unbudgeted cost.

How Long Do Teeth Whitening Results Last?

One to three years, and the variable is entirely you. Heavy coffee and red wine drinkers and smokers sit at the short end. Everybody else sits at the long end.

A top up session, or a few nights with the trays we made for you, restores the result. Keep the trays. They fit for years, and refill gel is inexpensive.

The first 48 hours after whitening matter more than most people realise. The enamel is temporarily more porous, so avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curry, tomato sauce, beetroot and tobacco during that window. Patients who ignore this stain straight back into the shade they started from.

Cost of Teeth Whitening in Albania

Professional whitening in Tirana costs a fraction of Western European pricing. In-office whitening in UK private practice commonly runs from £300 to £600, and in Italy or Germany from €300 to €500.

If you are already travelling to Tirana for larger treatment, whitening is very often added into the same visit at no extra appointment cost, since it fits around the other work.

One sequencing rule matters here and it will save you money: whiten first, then match any new crowns or veneers to the whitened shade. New restorations are made to the colour your teeth are on the day the impression is taken. Whitening suitability and final shade change vary from patient to patient. Existing crowns, veneers, bridges and fillings will not change colour with whitening gel.

Should You Fly to Albania Just for Teeth Whitening?

No, and it would be strange of us to say otherwise. The saving on a single whitening session will not cover a flight.
